UPSC conducts the Combined Defence Services Exam twice every year generally in February and August for recruiting officers for the OTA, IMA, INA and AFA. The examination comprises two stages-the first stage consists of a written test which consists of three sections which are general knowledge, English and Mathematics whose detailed syllabus is given below then those who qualify for the written test are called for an interview by the Service Selection Board (SSB) for Intelligence and Personality Test whose details are also provided below.

History (18 to 23 Questions asked every year)

The history section consists of Ancient India, Medieval India, and Modern India. Topics like Medieval India dates back from the mid-8th Century to the beginning of the 18th Century AD and is formed of the Mughal, Vijayanagar Empire, Sultanate rulers along with the rising, and fall of all rulers, historical period of Modern India and Indian Culture like architecture, dance forms, literature, paintings, music, etc. are some of the important topics for general knowledge history.

Geography (15 to 17 Questions asked every year)

Drainage Systems, Soils, Census, Mineral resources distribution, Location of mountains, boundaries of States, passes, Atmosphere, Oceans, Landforms, Important tribal groups, especially those living in hilly areas, etc.

Polity (13 to 17 Questions asked every year)

Preamble, Schedules, Constitution of India, Citizenship, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties, Directive Principles of State Policy, Union, Parliament, Judiciary, State Government, State Legislature, Administration of UT, Administration of Special Areas, Emergency Provisions, Panchayati raj and municipalities, Central and Interstate relations, Constitutional Bodies, Non-Constitutional Bodies, and Tribunals, etc.

Economics (12 to 14 Questions asked every year)

leading products of India like Pulses, Bananas, etc., and Green, White, and Blue Revolution, important industries of India, the Banking System of India, Currency and Inflation, working of international organizations like IMF, IDA, WTO, etc, census of India, etc. should be in your preparation list. Measurement, Motion, Work, Energy and Power, Rotational Motion, Gravitation, Properties of Matter, Heat and Thermodynamics, Oscillations and Waves, Optics, Electric Current, Modern Physics

Chemistry (8 to 10 Questions asked every year)

Matter, Atomic Structure, Radioactivity, Chemical Bonding, Redox Reactions, Gas Laws, Solutions, Acids Bases and Salts, Chemical Thermodynamics, Surface Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Man-Made Materials, Environment and its Pollution

For this section, aspirants need to be aware of the news at least 1 year before the exam date and 6 months before the filling of the application form.

SECTION C: CDS Mathematics Syllabus – (Elementary Mathematics)

Arithmetic

Number System: Natural numbers, Rational & Real numbers, and Integers. Fundamental operations, subtraction, multiplication, addition, division, Square roots, Decimal fractions. Unitary method, time and work, percentages, time and distance, applications to simple & compound interest, ratio and proportion, profit and loss, variation.

Elementary Number Theory: Division algorithm. Prime and composite numbers. Tests of divisibility by 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, and 11. Multiples and factors. Factorisation Theorem. L.C.M. and H.C.F. Euclidean algorithm. Logarithms to base 10, use of logarithmic tables and laws of logarithms.

Algebra

Basic Operations, simple factors, H.C.F., L.C.M., Remainder Theorem, Theory of polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, the relation between its roots & coefficients (Only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear inequations in two variables and their solutions. Simultaneous linear equations in two unknowns — analytical & graphical solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear equations or inequations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable & their solutions. Rational expressions and conditional identities, Set language & set notation, and Laws of indices.

Trigonometry

  • Sine ×, cosine ×, Tangent × when 0° < × < 90° Values of sin ×, cos × and tan ×, for × = 0°, 30°, 45°, 60° and 90°
  • Simple trigonometric identities.
  • Use of trigonometric tables.
  • Simple cases of heights and distances.

Geometry

  • Plane & plane figures,

Question: Who can Join CDS 2023?

Answer: Recently, Females are also allowed to join CDS but only in the Officers Training Academy i.e., OTA as per their rule of eligibility of females for CDS. So, Male candidates can join all four sectors IMA, INA, AFA & OTA and Female candidates are allowed for OTA only.
